Kitchens across Burton and east Staffordshire
Burton upon Trent grew around the breweries, and the housing grew with them. The red brick terraces through Shobnall, Horninglow and the streets off Uxbridge Street were built for brewery workers, and they share the constraints we know well from the Potteries — narrow rooms, a back addition holding the kitchen, solid walls with no cavity and a floor that is rarely as level as it looks.
Those kitchens need slimline appliances, doors that clear each other and storage that goes upward rather than outward. Almost always there is at least one unit that has to be made rather than bought, because a chimney breast or an external door sits exactly where a standard carcass wants to go.
Out at Stretton, Branston and the newer parts of Winshill the problem inverts. The fabric is sound and square, the layouts are generous, and what people want is to replace a builder’s standard kitchen with something that uses the room properly — better carcasses, a proper worktop, and an island where there is space for one.
The villages are different again. Rolleston-on-Dove, Tutbury, Barton under Needwood and Anslow have older stock where matching what is already there matters more than choosing something new, and parts of Tutbury sit within a conservation area.
There is one thing every Burton kitchen has to be specified around, and it is the same thing that built the town.
Burton’s water is exceptionally hard — heavy in dissolved calcium sulphate drawn from the gypsum beds under the Trent valley. It is the reason the brewing industry settled here rather than anywhere else, and brewers elsewhere still add those salts to imitate it.
It is excellent for pale ale and hard on kitchens. Scale builds on taps, kettles, boiling-water taps and dishwasher elements far quicker than it does thirty miles north, and a polished chrome tap that looks immaculate in a showroom will show every water mark by the end of the first week.
None of that is a problem if the kitchen is specified for it. It becomes one when it is not, and the conversation happens six months later.

Tap finish
Brushed and matt finishes hide water marks; polished chrome advertises them. It costs nothing to choose well at the design stage and it is the single most visible difference a year in.
Boiling water taps
Worth having, but only with the scale filter fitted and a plan for changing it. Without one they scale up and fail, and the repair is not cheap. We will tell you the running cost before you commit.
Softener space
A softener needs a cupboard, a drain connection and a power point. Designing that in during the fit costs almost nothing. Retro-fitting means losing a cupboard you have just paid for.
Dishwasher plumbing
Most dishwashers here need salt topping up genuinely regularly, not occasionally. Where a softener is going in, the machine can be plumbed off the softened supply instead.
We are not going to push a water softener on you — plenty of people live with Burton water perfectly happily and would rather spend the money on the kitchen. But the decision is far cheaper made now than later, so we raise it at the survey either way.
If your ground floor has flooded, or could
Parts of Burton sit close to the Trent and the Washlands, and properties there have a flood history that anyone local will know about. It changes what we would specify on a ground floor.
Chipboard-cored units and engineered wood flooring are the wrong answer near water. Moisture-resistant carcasses, a tiled or LVT floor laid over a suitable board, removable plinths and sockets set higher up the wall all cost little extra at fitting and save an entire kitchen if the worst happens.
If you are in one of those streets, say so at the survey. It is a specification conversation, not a reason to do less.

Will hard water damage a new kitchen?
Damage is the wrong word, but it will age it faster if nothing is specified for it. Scale builds on tap spouts and aerators, kettles and boiling-water taps need descaling far more often than the manufacturer’s optimistic schedule suggests, and polished chrome shows every mark. The fittings themselves are fine; it is the look and the appliances that suffer. Choose the finishes with it in mind and you will barely notice.
Should I have a water softener fitted at the same time?
If you are going to have one at all, fitting it during the kitchen is much the cheapest moment. It needs a cupboard, a drain and a socket, and designing those in while the floor is up and the units are being planned costs very little. Doing it afterwards means giving up a cupboard you have just paid for and cutting into a finished plinth. Worth knowing that a softener does not usually feed the drinking tap, which stays on the mains — we plan that in too.
Can you knock through into the dining room?
Forming a structural opening needs a steel beam, engineer’s calculations and building regulations approval from East Staffordshire Borough Council, and structural work is not something we take on. What we do is everything after it — fitting the kitchen into the new space, running the flooring through both halves, moving electrics and radiators to suit and making good the reveals. Plenty of our work is sequenced behind a builder who forms the opening first.
